*1ATTN: Michigan Adoptees/Birth Families Searching! For Search/Support/Michigan Adoption Search Resources [CLICK HERE!] If you were born and adopted, or gave birth and relinquished a child in Michigan between May 28, 1948 and September 12, 1980, you are considered a part of the "Closed Adoption Era" in Michigan (the "Closed Adoption Era" is very similar in scope in all states with the exception of slight variations in the dates). This means that the laws for receiving records of the adoption are "Closed/Sealed" and only "Non-Identifying Information" is available to adoptees, adoptive families and biological family members. THE VERY FIRST STEP for a person of this Era is to request NON-IDENTIFYING INFORMATION (read further for a description). ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` Non-identifying Information is information collected by either the Adoption Agency or Court of Adoption Finalization (sometimes both!) from the biological families (generally it is comprised of information from the biological mother's side of the family, though sometimes will include information from the biological father's side of the family, as well). This information covers "historical items of interest" to the potential Adoptive Family (and potentially the Adoptee, later in life), but without information that would outright identify the biological family (pursuant to close adoption laws during this Era). ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` Included in the Non-Identifying Information are tidbits like (pertaining to the biological family, especially the biological mother and sometimes the biological father): physical descriptions, nationality/countries of origin, church or religious affiliations, education, employment, special skills, hobbies and other "non-identifying" items of interest. Sometimes information about other biological siblings also in existence at the time, as well as circumstances surrounding the adoption are also provided (most times not). ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` If you have previously obtained Non-Identifying Information (this applies to both Adoptees and Birth Families searching) from either the adoption agency that facilitated the adoption, the county where the adoption was finalized or the hospital of birth, and it has been at least 10 years since you last obtained a copy, it would be a good idea to request the information again as information provided can sometimes change (i.e., be more plentiful the second time around). This information can be helpful to Adoptees in search as it can provide a clearer picture of their birth circumstances. This information can also be helpful to birth families (mother, father, siblings or birth relatives) as it may help to confirm the date of birth, adoption agency, maternity home, hospital of birth and county of adoption finalization. Keep in mind that this information will not reveal any "identifying" information. Do not be disappointed, this is standard procedure across the country. The information is only helpful in clarifying birth circumstances and assisting in determining the next best course of action. NOTE: Please be sure NOT to divulge all of your non-identifying information to someone that you do not know (especially on the Internet), it is in your best interest to keep some information withheld in order to further confirm information later, or - in the event that you have discovered a lost relative - help you to divest of scam artists and determine your next step in the process. ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` If you aren't aware of it already, there is a resource that exists both online and offline to support biological family members in search of one another (whether for medical information, just to cure the curiosity bug, or for reunion/relationship; the reasons for searching will, of course, vary). ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` That resource (for search process advice) is: www.michigansearching.com ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` The group that founded this website also meets online (for search advice and support), via their "E-Group" on Yahoo!: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MichiganSearching ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` The E-Group on Yahoo! will offer more direct assistance (via the Internet) with your adoptee/biological family search. There are many, many helpful and knowledgeable folks here who have also traveled the same road as you are currently traveling yourself. The search assistance and support here is entirely FREE and exists solely on a volunteer basis (most volunteers are biological family members who are either searching -or- have searched and found, and desire to help others do the same.) This is one of the largest in the country (and only of its size in Michigan) adoptee/biological family online/offline search resource and support group. Though more rare than common, it has actually occurred that biological relatives have been reunited through this support group mechanism itself.` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` Join the Group and inquire to them about how to obtain a copy of your "Non-Identifying Information" (if you haven't received it [updated copy included] already) from 3 potential sources: 1) County Court where adoption was finalized 2) Agency that facilitated adoption 3) Hospital where the adoptee was born ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` The "Non-Identifying Information" will help provide the biggest picture possible of the birth circumstances and best determine your next best course of action. This Search & Support Group can also help with defunct agencies and hospitals and who now holds those records. You'll probably have the most luck with the court and the adoption agency (it is more rare to obtain birth records from hospitals in adoption searches).` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` NOTE: If you happen to have a SURNAME of the biological family (if you are the Adoptee searching) or a SURNAME of the adoptive family (if you are the biological family searching), know that you have a very potent tool in your search arsenal! This group will also be able to direct you in the use of the surname to locate your lost party (cost is free to small nominal fee for legwork). This is a very small price to pay (if any) for surname-based information, considering the alternatives (i.e., private investigators and the like with quoted prices starting around $250 just to "initiate" a search) ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` PLEASE NOTE: Responses to this post cannot be answered.
