I am searching for my maternal grandfather. I was adopted in 1967 but traced my birth parents. My birth mother Susan, whilst living with her mother was adopted by the man she always believed to be her natural father-Wilfred Shaw. We are unsure if her birth father ever knew of her existence as we believe that he and his family emigrated to Canada. My mum was born in Manchester in November 1947 to Mary McAllister. We believe that her father was Benjamin Whittam and he lived in Moston Manchester at 13 Worsefold Street with his family which included an older sister named Joy born in 1921. Benjamin was born at the hous in Worsefold Street on 7th August 1923 to Arthur and his wife Ethel nee Cottam. His father was a police constable - municipal at the time of Benjamin's birth and was still serving in 1947 when my grandmother knew benjamin. It is our undertanding that his family emigrated to canada some time before the birth. The records we have uncovered to date show that the family sailed from Southampton to New York in 1947. Benjamin served in the royal air-force possibly RAF logistics at Wortley in Yorkshire (No 42 group/220 maintenance Unit/RAF maintenance Command either starting or ending his service on 23.11.1944 ref R776655). It was so important to me to find my birth parents and fill in some blanks. My mum has tried different ways to try and trace Ben or any relatives who may be related to him in order to ascertain if he is in fact her birth father but we can not find any more information. My maternal grandmother is now 82 and if Benjamin is still living he would have just celebrated his 85th Birthday). My grandmother is RC but believes Ben's family were not as he did not attend the R.C school! If you have any information on this family or think you may be in any way related to us we would be glad to hear from you. We do not wish to disrupt anyones life or to embarress anyone either living or dead but as others out there in similar circumstances will tell you there is always a hole and a million why's and wherefores'not least medical histories which are so important and we would really like a photograph if that is at all possible, If you are related and do not wish to be contacted for whatever reason please make contact with us or make a picture available to us.
