Q: What is a "registry"?

A: A registry is a database of profiles. People in search of a birth parent, birth sibling, or an adopted child, may post a profile into the registry. The profile contains a description of the person(s) you are searching for, along with some associated information such as various surnames and geographic areas associated with your search.

Q: How do I post a profile?

A: The easiest way to get started is to click on the "Register" tab at the top of any webpage on ARC. You will be asked to provide your e-mail address. Your e-mail address is needed so that anyone else that might be able to help you can contact you. You will then be asked to compose some text describing yourself and your search. In addition, you can attach a photograph of yourself, your parents, or anything else that you feel could enhance your profile.

Q: How does ARC work?

A: All profiles posted into ARC are indexed by surnames and geographic areas. When you post your profile into ARC, you are required to specify at least one surname and at least one geographic area. The surname could be your surname, your birth surname, your birth parent's surname, etc. The geographic area could be the place of birth, the place of adoption, the place where the adopted family lived, etc.

When someone visits ARC, the first thing they will do is initiate a surname search. The surname they search for will be compared to the surnames associated with the profiles.

When someone finds a profile that appears familiar to them, they can contact the person who posted that profile, by clicking a link to compose an e-mail. All e-mail is composed and sent on ARC. The e-mail is delivered directly to that person's e-mail address. That person may choose to respond to you. If they respond, the response will be sent directly to your e-mail address. Responses are not stored or received by ARC.

Q: What is the ARC Network?

A: This is a series of websites that are volunteering to display a portion or all of our registry. When people visit those websites, they will be able to see the profiles posted on ARC. agreed to help promote the profiles posted into ARC. When a profile is posted into ARC, it will also appear on other adoptee and genealogy related websites. The end result is that the profiles posted in ARC receive attention from several websites all over the Internet.
