Adoption and Its Effect on Children and Family Structures
September 11, 2004 The Children's Home of Pittsburgh, in collaboration with Three Rivers Adoption Council, will welcome Dr. David Brodzinsky to Pittsburgh on September 10 to deliver a seminar entitled "Clinical Issues and Interventions in Adoption." The seminar is designed to educate mental health professionals and anyone who works with families and children on the most recent data and information available about adoption. The seminar, which will be held at Rodef Shalom, 4905 Fifth Avenue in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh, will be from 8:00 am until Noon. Dr. Brodzinsky will discuss some of the most common clinical issues in adopted children. Attendees will gain information regarding identifying individual, familial, and systemic factors that contribute to these problems. They will also learn two specific interventions as ways of addressing adoption issues in clinical treatment. Dr. Brodzinsky is the author and/or editor of four books on adoption, including "The Psychology of Adoption" (1990); "Being Adopted: The Lifelong Search for Self" (1992); "Children's Adjustment to Adoption: Developmental and Clinical Issues" (1998); and "Adoption and Prenatal Drug Exposure: Research, Policy, and Practice" (2000). A fifth book, "Psychological Issues in Adoption: Theory, Research and Practice" is in preparation. Dr. Brodzinsky was a founding director and currently serves on the Board of Directors and as a Senior Research Fellow for the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute, a policy oriented think-tank located in New York City. David Brodzinsky, Ph. D. is Professor of Developmental and Clinical Psychology and Director of the Foster Care Counseling Project at Rutgers University in New Jersey. "The Children's Home's philosophy on adoption is that it is not a one time event but a lifelong journey. In keeping with this philosophy and the programs that we offer, such as post adoption counseling, we are pleased to be able to extend this unique opportunity to educate mental health professionals and adoption-related workers throughout the Pittsburgh area."
