Kathy Kunkel, CEO of A Act of Love Adoptions, was selected by Jim Matheson to be one of 175 Congressional Angels in Adoption for the year 2004. This event is hosted by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI) at a national ceremony held in Washington, D.C. on Thursday September 23, 2004.

CCAI is a non-partisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to raising congressional and public awareness about the tens of thousands of foster children in this country and the millions of orphans around the world in need of permanent, safe, and loving homes; and to eliminating the barriers that hinder these children from realizing their need of family. The Angels in Adoption program was created in 1999 to raise public awareness of the many different ways that committed individuals can help children and families through adoption. There are millions of children around the globe in need of adoptive homes, in the U.S. alone more than 550 thousand children are in the foster care system with tens of thousands available for adoptions.

“I would like to, first, from my heart, thank Congressman Jim Matheson for selecting me. I feel very grateful and honored to be one of the 175 Congressional Angels in Adoption for the year 2004. I know I was given strength through the help of God and His many answered prayers. I would like to thank my husband, Dieter, of thirty-five years and our ten children: Heidi, Shannon, Mindy, Jason, Kenzie, Jared, Kaylee, Jacob, Jarom and Mia. I express my sincere love and appreciation for their support through the many years in adoption. To me, they are my angels. There are many other angels in adoption, with whom I associate with daily, that I would like to recognize: all our adoptive families for opening their hearts and homes for these precious angels that have come to them through adoption and for our birth mothers and birth fathers of our adopted children; my loving staff, at A Act of Love Adoptions, for all their prayers and endless support for adoption; and the attorneys, doctors, therapists, agencies, and friends nationwide.”

Each year, CCAI invites all members of the United States Congress to participate in the Angels in Adoption program as it is a unique opportunity for federal legislators to recognize individuals from their home states who have improved the lives of foster children and orphans. Additionally, National Angels in Adoption are selected for raising awareness about children in need on a national level. This year, CCAI will honor actress Jane Symour, PGA golfer Kirk Triplett and his wife Cathi and Vice President of the Orlando Magic, Pat Williams and his wife Ruth as the 2004 National Angels in Adoption. Since the program’s inception in 1999, member of Congress have awarded over 550 congressional Angels in Adoption from all 50 states and invited them to attend the extraordinary awards banquet in their honor. This year more than one hundred and seventy-five members of Congress have participated, including Jim Matheson.
